Why should I see a rheumatologist?
Rheumatologists specialise in diagnosing and treating autoimmune and inflammatory conditions. These conditions can affect joints, muscles and other body systems. They can be difficult to diagnose and require a systematic approach to diagnosis and management.
Examples of reasons to consider seeing a rheumatologist:
- Persistent joint pain/swelling/stiffness that lasts for more than a few weeks and is affecting typically more than one joint.
- Unexplained muscle pain/weakness/stiffness.
- Autoimmune symptoms including extreme fatigue, rashes, new Raynaud’s (colour changes in your hands and feet), unexplained fevers, hair loss. Multiple symptoms effecting different parts of the body without a known cause.
- Early diagnosis and treatment. Many rheumatic conditions progress over time. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of complications
- Long term management of chronic rheumatological conditions. Support with long-term disease management, monitoring, adjusting treatments as needed and support on approach to exercise.
- Second opinion for diagnosis. Autoimmune conditions can be tricky to diagnoses as they often mimic other conditions. A rheumatologists expertise can confirm or clarify a diagnosis and provide a treatment plan specific for your condition.
